The De Anza Dons men's basketball team suffered a defeat by the hands of the Hartnell Panthers on Jan. 29 with a final score of 73-71.
The Dons played hard during the first quarter, keeping the energy level high to maintain the lead. However, the Dons came up short despite three three-pointers from Darian Broadwax and a slam dunk by forward Don Washington.
The intensity of the game kept the crowd on its feet. As the first quarter came to an end, the Dons found themselves just a field goal away from taking the lead at 34-33. Neither team had incurred any fouls during the first period.
The first quarter's close score gave hope for the second. The score remawined close causing the Dons to keep up their defensive efforts. Despite the crowd chanting in support, "We want this DA," the Dons struggled to bring home the victory as the Panthers stayed on the offensive and took advantage of any free throw opportunities.
The energy of the players never ceased, but as the game came to a close, the Panthers were "hitting big shots at the end and we didn't," said Dons head coach Jason Damjanovic. "They are a very mature team with older players. It was a learning experience for my guys. It one of our better games, I think all year. I was happy, except for the end result."
