Be more than 'thankful' this Thanksgiving

Issue date: 11/20/06 Section: Opinion
As winter sets in many start gearing up for the holidays. Thanksgiving is all about eating large amounts of food, getting together with family and, of course, giving thanks.
But just being thankful for all the great things in life is not good enough. It's also about making someone thankful for what you have given to them.
Thanksgiving, and the holidays in general, are a perfect time to get out and volunteer. Opportunities are as plentiful as mashed potatoes at Thanksgiving dinner. You can donate canned foods and jackets or give to toy drives and make holiday food baskets. Take time out of your holiday rush and give that time to someone whose holiday is not as happy as yours. This goes for everyone. No matter where you live, there are people in your community that are hungry, tired and alone in the cold winter months ahead.
So look through your house. Get rid of a few extra cans of refried beans you won't need. Donate that old jacket or that ninja turtle action fi gure you've kept around because you're sure it'll be worth a million dollars someday.
There are plenty of things right in your own home that could be making the lives of the needy just a little easier. So don't just say "thanks" this Thanksgiving - say "you're welcome."
