'Daddios' making the scene

Rarely does one get to hear a real, live band, not to mention a full jazz ensemble. That's just what came wafting through the cool night air sauntering past the A-3 building one Wednesday night.
The De Anza College Daddios Evening Jazz Ensembles, led by Steve Tyler, meet every Wednesday night at 6 for the community jazz band, and at 8 for the higher-level group.
In the 1960s, the late Dr. Herb Patnoe established the Ensembles as big bands to play jazz of all eras and perform around De Anza and the greater community.
In addition to teaching at numerous colleges, Tyler has worked as a freelance musician in the Los Angeles area for many years, and has toured in the orchestras of Mel Tormé and others.
The six o'clock Daddios ensemble is open to anyone who can play a standard "big band" instrument and can read sheet music.
Students are required to attend the fi rst meeting in A-31 Wednesday night, Jan. 10, in order to join the group. Students can see the upper-division Daddios ensemble in a performance this Friday, Jan. 12 at the Sonoma Chicken Coop in downtown San Jose.
