Although George E.Smith is older than most students at De Anza College, he does not find it awkward to interact with his younger peers. Since he started attending De Anza, he has been involved with international students. His knowledge of Vietnamese and his open mind makes his bond with international students that much stronger.

He is a drama major with a lot of energy. He is in the honors program for drama at Foothill College. This year, Smith will be performing his own monologue at Foothill College. He says he wishes De Anza invested more in its drama program because he believes much can be achieved through acting.

Smith is also an active member in over fifty clubs on campus. Since he is the current Inter Club Council Chair, he cannot favor a certain one. He says his only regret is not reaching out earlier to his peers. Once Smith got involved, particularly with international students, he said he found his true identity and self worth.

He is most proud of being on the staff of Insider, the De Anza student magazine, this past summer. In the past five years, he has been nominated for Poet of the Year and he also received the Editors' Choice award from the International Library of Poetry. Noble House of London, England published his work in 2006.

"Open-Minded Equality" was Smith's first attempt at poetry. The poem was in the running to be engraved on the National Peace Shrine in Washington D.C. Other students say they view Smith as an inspiration, as he is always willing to lend a helping hand
