Too many fathers are left behind on their day just because their children are hurting for cash. La Voz Weekly has some suggestions for a memorable Father's Day Weekend that won't stretch your wallet.
Outdoor Dad
Fishing Go fishing at Loch Lomond, where pops can also obtain that fishing license he's been meaning to renew. The lake is right off highway 17 in Felton. Fishing supplies and boat rentals are also available, and hiking, picnicking and barbecuing are allowed in designated areas. For rules, regulations and directions, call 831-335-7424. When: Loch Lomond is open from 6 a.m. to 8:30 p.m daily. Where: 100 Loch Lomond Way, Felton Cost: $4 for car admission. Fishing is free, but a fishing license is required. Licenses are for sale at Loch Lomond for $12.10/day license and $37.30/ annual license. Hiking, picnicking, and barbecuing is free. Bring your own boats and go boating in the loch for $5/trailer-towed boat, $2/car-towed boat. Boat Rentals are $5/hour for paddle and row boats, $10/hour for electric trolling motorboats, and a twohour rental minimum. Camping If it's not too late, an overnight camping excursion is an inexpensive way to have fun with the family. Memorial Park in La Honda is less than two hours away. Pancake Breakfast Begin the day right - with a full belly - with a father's day pancake breakfast in Felton in Santa Cruz County to support the local Zayante Firefighters Association. Go to http://www.zayantefire. org for directions. When: June 17, 7 a.m. to 12 p.m. Where: Zayante Station One, 7700 East Zayante Rd., Felton. Cost: $6 a person, $3 for kids, and free for kids under six. After the firehouse breakfast, fire up that BBQ and toss some steaks (or veggie burgers) on the grill. Farmer's Market Or, saunter down to Santana Row early afternoon for the weekly farmer's market to find fresh produce, freshly caught seafood and baked goods. When: Sundays, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Where: Santana Row, between Olin and Olsen. Cost: Free to get in, the food unfortunately costs money.
Urban Dad
Fancy Cars Treat pops to a test drive in his dream car from one of the many dealerships on Stevens Creek Boulevard in San Jose. Best thing is it's free! When: Check dealerships for hours. Cost: Free. Fine Art The San Jose Museum of Art is right downtown and currently exhibiting work from artists Il Lee, Camille Rose Garcia and Jess. SJMA also houses a collection of over 1,400 pieces from this century and the last. When: Open Sundays from 11 a.m. - 5 p.m. Where: 110 South Market St. Cost: $8 admission for adults, $5 for students and a $2 discount with a SJ Public Library card (that's $3 for a student with a library card!).
