WAYS TO STAY ACT IVE AND HEALTHY FOR THE ULTIMATE SUMMER VACATION
Lisa Gregg
Summer vacation is around the corner and it's time to bring out those unforgiving bathing suits. Now is the perfect opportunity to shed the winter holiday flab and get back in shape. Summer is the best time to get and stay fit because of the sunny weather.
One of the ways to stay fit is with a bike ride or a walk to work. Both exercises are not just good for your body, but good for the environment as well.
Walk with family and friends at Alum Rock Park or Santa Teresa Park. Vasona Park on Blossom Hill Road in Los Gatos provides great scenery, a small train to ride, a large playground for children and miles of trails. Large, open grassy areas invite park-goers to toss around a ball.
Enjoy clear waters and rent a non-motorized paddle boat or sailboat and go for a spin around the lake.
Baseball, football, basketball and soccer are great outdoor summer sports that can be played in most parks. For variety, swing the bat at Fontanetto Athletic Batting Cages in Santa Clara or check out the Santa Teresa Golf Club in San Jose. To get fit by eating healthy, eat plenty of whole grains, fruits and vegetables. Choose a variety of foods, as every food group helps with a different function in the body.
Another aspect of healthy eating is to eat moderate portions. For example, an appropriate portion of meat is three ounces. Try not to skip meals. Students may have a hard time with this concept, because of their work and school schedules. Making lunch the previous night is one way to eliminate rushed mornings.
So, if you want to stay fit, go to a park or hiking trail. Grab a friend to pal around with in case you get bored. Play outside sports with your family and friends. If you still prefer to work indoors and avoid the heat then try Gold's Gym or 24 Hour Fitness.
As a student you can sometimes receive
discounts. Gyms also have classes
for club members: yoga, Pilates, dance
and swimming. Above all, eat right. But,
it's OK to enjoy sweets now and again. It's
summer, after all.
