The Dons baseball team is still out there competing. They showed their heart and determination in a tough 7-6 loss aginst San Francisco City College on April 24.
A familiar scene had taken place at the De Anza baseball field when the Dons were down 1-0 in the top of the 1st. But De Anza struck back quickly in the bottom of the 1st when Kale Moniz singled up the middle after a leadoff out. Brian Roby followed with a double that moved Moniz to third, and Jamie Wagner drove him in with a sacrifice fly to tie the game at 1. A flyout ended the inning
However, the top of the second saw a different fortune for starting pitcher Alex Kasinski and the De Anza baseball team. A single led off the SFCC attack and a ball in the dirt let that runner advance to second, and the batter ultimately reached on a walk.
Kasiniski got the next two batters out, but the runners did advance to 2nd and 3rd on a strike out in the dirt. However, Kasinski walked the next batter to load the bases, again with two outs. The next SFCC batter singled just passed the diving Mike Cala at third base, which allowed two runs to score.
Two more runs scored when a ball was grounded over the outstretched glove of first baseman Tommy Erlin, after a double preceded it. Another run scored before Kasinski struck out the 9th batter of the inning, and the Dons had an uphill battle the rest of the way.
The starting SFCC pitcher started the inning by getting Travis Adams to fly out to deep center and striking out Cala. With the first two Dons batters out, catcher Adam Wells opened up the offense with a single between short and third.
The offense continued with a Marc Fuentes single to move Wells to second. Then center fielder Danny Hall singled to score Wells to bring the score a bit closer, 6-2. Moniz drew a walk to load the bases and Roby singled to right field to score Fuentes and Hall. A ground out ended the inning, but the Dons had crawled back to a 6-4 deficit.
"They showed a lot of resiliency," said coach Scott Hertler. "They showed a lot of spunk and we were able to get back into it."
After a tough second inning, Kasinski was back out there and held SFCC scoreless for the next two innings until he was pulled.
The Dons brought the game to 6-5 in the bottom of the 4th when Moniz had a sac fly to score Fuentes. The Dons made their pitching change, bringing in Brendon Poss. He had shut the SFCC offense down with mostly sliders, not allowing a run since coming in, until the 9th.
In the bottom of the 8th, Hall tied the game up at 6. "We need to get off to a better start," said Hall who finished the game with 3 hits and 2 RBI's.
The Dons gave up the go ahead run in the top of the 9th inning and they weren't able to push a run across in the bottom of the 9th with a good chance. But in fighting back, they showed they haven't quit on each other and are still out to compete every game despite the tough losses.
