Issue date: 5/27/08 Section: Sports
Name: Cynthia Chaidez
Hometown: San Jose
Major: Communications
School Next Fall: Undecided
Favorite Athlete: Suzy Hamilton
Most Memorable Sports Moment: This year Cynthia Chaidez achieved All-American status in the 1500m run at the state shampionships. She also ran in the 800m and 5000m, hoping to gain All-American honors in those events.
"The last two didn't go as planned," Chaidez said. "I was a little bummed."
Chaidez's journey to the elite ranks started in middle school when she started to do track.
"I'm not coordinated," said Chaidez. This hasn't stopped her incredible drive to be the best at her events. Her best event is the 800m run and her best time is a 2:16.
Out of high school, Chaidez was offered a scholarship to San Francisco State University and accepted it, but after one year, transferred to De Anza College.
While here at De Anza, Chaidez won several meets. She was the Coast Conference champion in the 800, 1500 and 5000m runs, and was NorCal champion in the 800 and 1500 and runner-up in the 5000. She is also ranked in the top 10 in the nation in the 800 and 1500m runs.
Chaidez's success doesn't just come on the track. She was recently named Female Scholar Athlete of the Year for cross country and track & field at a ceremony last Wednesday.
She also attributes her success to her teammates and coaches, who were always there cheering her on at every meet in which she competed.
With her all around abilities on and off the track, any school would be foolish not to have this All-American runner representing their university in the fall.
